Tesco’s Irish Suppliers Feel Bullied
It has been reported in the Irish press that, Tesco have been asking suppliers to pay large sums of money if they want their products to be kept on the supermarket’s shelves. There have been complaints about other retailers and their demands, but Tesco’s are greater, and suppliers feel ‘bullied’.
Chairman of the Love Irish Food campaign, Jim Power, an economist, has asked the Competition Authority to look into the complaints. He said that this cannot be allowed to happen because it will destroy an important strand of the fabric of Irish society, Irish supplers cannot be pushed out of the market as part of the Tescoisation of society. He added that there’s a difference between what’s not illegal and what’s not in the best interests of our society. It is thought that the Minister for Enterprise, May Coughlan, will introduce a code of practice and appoint an ombudsman for the grocery sector. Source
